Blair Gavin is in his second season as an Assistant Coach with the New England Revolution. Hired on January 8, 2024 after one season as Head Coach of FC Tulsa in the USL Championship, Gavin, a former Revolution player, reunites with Caleb Porter after serving as an Assistant Coach on his staff in Columbus in 2022.
Gavin, 36, earned his first coaching opportunity in 2018 with Phoenix Rising FC after his retirement. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native, who spent his final two seasons as a player with his hometown club from 2016-17, joined Patrice Carteron’s staff at just 29 years old. In his first season coaching Phoenix, Gavin helped guide the club to a Western Conference Championship and its first berth in the USL Cup Final. In 2019, Gavin and Phoenix finished with the best regular season record in the USL Championship. In his final season with Phoenix in 2020, Gavin helped the club reach the USL Cup Final once again, though the championship match was cancelled due to health and safety protocols.
As a player, Gavin spent eight seasons as a midfielder in MLS and the USL. He was originally selected by Chivas USA as the 10th-overall pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. In parts of three seasons with Chivas, Gavin appeared in 43 matches, scoring three goals. Midway through the 2012 season, he was acquired by the New England Revolution and went on to make two appearances for the club. After a brief spell with Seattle Sounders FC, Gavin moved to the NASL with the Atlanta Silverbacks, followed by three years in the USL Championship with Portland Timbers 2 and Arizona United/Phoenix Rising FC, tallying 86 more appearances and five goals.
The former two-time First Team All-Mid-American Conference honoree played three seasons of collegiate soccer under Porter at the University of Akron. Gavin scored seven goals over 68 games for the Zips, helping the team earn a berth in the 2009 College Cup Final. He capped off his college career by earning a Generation adidas contract ahead of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. While in college, Gavin also played three years for the IMG Academy’s Bradenton Academics in the Premier Development League (now USL League Two), where he made 38 appearances.
On the international stage, Gavin earned youth call-ups to the United States Under-18 and Under-20 National Teams. He featured five times for the U-18s from 2006-07, and once for the U-20s in 2008. Earlier in his youth club career, Gavin competed for the Sereno (Ariz.) Soccer Club, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation, winning the Arizona State Cup four years in a row. He also won nationally acclaimed tournaments such as the Surf Cup, Celtic Cup, Nomads and the Disney Soccer Showcase.
