There was never any doubt that Carles Gil was MLS All-Star material, and on Wednesday night in Charlotte, he proved why in emphatic fashion. The New England Revolution captain earned his fifth call-up to the league’s All-Star roster after another standout start to the season, leading New England in goal contributions with six goals and five assists while helping drive the Revs to third place in the Eastern Conference.
When it came time to play among the league’s best, Capi went full throttle, creating an iconic link-up with one of the world’s best in Son Heung-Min. Gil assisted both of Son’s goals in the MLS team’s 4-3 win over the Liga MX All-Stars. Proving once again just how special he is, Gil started after just a few days of training and displaying instant chemistry.
The duo first combined to find the net in the 20th minute when Gil stole possession from Liga MX and quickly found Son for a perfectly placed long ball into the box. The LAFC forward needed just one touch to settle before burying it to level the score for the MLS side. Just three minutes later, the pair struck again as Gil curved the ball from the touchline back to Son. Again, the Spanish maestro slotted it seamlessly, allowing Son to finish with an epic volley, putting MLS ahead 2-1.
“Speaking of humility, I think he personifies it – somebody who continues every single day to earn every accolade that comes his way, and he really sets the tone for the group,” Revolution assistant coach Sean Hughes said of Gil before the All-Star match. “He has special talent, but more importantly, his work ethic every single day in his application. We have a lot of young players within our group, and I think for them to see somebody up close and personal every day putting in the effort – and obviously he gets the rewards.”
Gil joined the group in Charlotte following the Revolution’s dominant 4-1 win over Atlanta United FC at Gillette Stadium last weekend, when he put on a goal-and-assist performance in front of over 34,000 fans. He returns to Foxborough with some extra momentum as the Revs now hit the road for the first time since returning from the FIFA World Cup break.
New England will kick off at Stade Saputo against CF Montréal on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET, looking to convert their home success to away victories.
