FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Carles Gil cemented his place in the New England Revolution record books as the club’s all-time assist leader this past Saturday night, when his 48th-minute cross was finished off by Ignatius Ganago to seal the Revs’ 2-0 win over New York City FC at Gillette Stadium.

The assist was the Revolution captain’s 74th regular-season helper, surpassing club legend Steve Ralston for the number one spot. In true leadership fashion, Gil insisted that while it is an accomplishment he is proud of, it is all for the success of the team.

“For me, it’s something I’m proud of to be able to have, this many assists. It motivates me to continue helping the team in any way I can” he explained after Saturday’s win. “Overall, that’s what is important, helping the team get the victory [tonight].”

Saturday’s assist wasn’t just a milestone for Gil – it also delivered Ganago’s first goal with the Revs, and sealed a 2-0 victory in front of 21,081 fans. Beyond the assist, Gil’s performances in the past few matches have helped New England turn their season around and claim wins in three of their last four games.

“He is obviously one of the best players in the league. As far as a pure chance creator or assist guy, he's the best guy I've coached,” head coach Caleb Porter said of Gil. “I've had some good players that produce goals in that spot at the 10, but in terms of a setup guy, he's the best guy that I've had. I've had [Lucas] Zelarayán and [Diego] Valeri, some really, really good players in that spot. But he's a great pro and a great guy, and you just see how hard he works. It's very rare in our league to have a guy like him that has so much quality, but is so humble and defends like he defends. Just a great player and a great person.”

The record-setting performance was actually Gil’s second of the season, after he tied Ralston for second-most goal contributions in club history following his successful penalty in last week’s victory in Atlanta. After Saturday’s match, Gil has now overtaken Ralston, with a total of 116 goal contributions for the Revolution, with 74 assists and 42 goals.

The 2021 MLS MVP has dominated the midfield for New England this season, helping the team turn a corner after a slow start to 2025. Until Saturday – which saw Ganago and Leo Campana score their first goals of the season – Gil stood as the only goal-scorer of 2025, finding the scoresheet three times so far.

“I am very proud of the other two clubs I was in, we were able to leave trophies in the trophy case. I am hoping to do that here with guys likes Carles, because when I am old and grey and sitting in the rocking chair, I will look back and remember, more than anything, the relationship I had with a guy like Carles,” said Porter. “I can’t say enough about him. The fans, hopefully they realize how fortunate we are to have a player like him.”
