FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Gershon Koffie has been one of the New England Revolution’s most consistent performers through the first month of the 2016 season, culminating with what head coach Jay Heaps called “a near perfect night” last weekend against Toronto FC.

Koffie completed 44 of his 48 passes against TFC and was the fulcrum of New England’s attack, playing a key role in the buildup to Kelyn Rowe’s goal and picking up a secondary assist in the process.

“I thought Gershon had an excellent night,” said Heaps. “There was, I think, one time at the end of the night when he got picked, but other than that he had a near perfect night with the ball and defensively.”

Defensively Koffie was instrumental in the Revolution’s efforts to shut down reigning MLS MVP Sebastian Giovinco. Although the diminutive attacker did score TFC’s only goal with a deflected strike, Giovinco only attempted 28 passes from the run of play and only connected on 18 of them.

New England used a team effort to limit Giovinco’s influence, but Koffie was a vital component, preventing the Italian from finding space and shutting down TFC’s lanes to their chief architect.

“He’s their danger man, and if you can keep that danger man out of the game, you can win the game, which coach asked us to do,” Koffie said. “I thought we did that.”

Although the Revs were disappointed to claim just a single point from the game, they were encouraged by the performance, with Koffie – named to the MLS Team of the Week – at the forefront.

Now they’ll return to the road for a nationally-televised tilt with Orlando City SC on Sunday (3:30 p.m. on ESPN), and Koffie will be looking to continue his fine run of form as part of a strong Revs performance.

“We’re going to keep the same mindset,” Koffie said. “We’re going on the road to get points.”
