FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – It’s hard to pinpoint the moment a player becomes a legend. Is it a game-winning goal in a cup final? Is it once they officially enter the record books? Must their name be passed down for generations before they can claim the title? Tradition tells us legends belong to the past, but Carles Gil is rewriting that narrative.
The New England Revolution midfielder just broke a major club record for the second time this season, proving that greatness isn’t only something that comes with being remembered – it can unfold right in front of our eyes. Gil isn’t just on the path to becoming a legend, he already is one.
“I just can't say enough about Carles, because he's a top player and yet he's so humble. He's a team guy,” said head coach Caleb Porter. “He’s got confidence, he’s got quality, and he’s a true pro.”
After notching both a goal and an assist last Saturday against D.C. United, the Revolution captain officially secured the title for most goal contributions in club history. Held previously by Taylor Twellman (129), Gil now has a combined 130 regular season goals and assists for New England. With 48 goals and 82 assists, Gil surpassed the club’s all-time assist record earlier this season, edging in front of Steve Ralston’s previous mark of 73.
The moment could not have been scripted better for Gil. On Alumni Night, with 20 club greats in attendance – including Twellman himself – Gil led the Revolution to a crucial 2-0 victory. Twellman, whose name is synonymous with greatness around the Revolution training ground, declared pregame that Gil is the best player in Revolution history.
“It’s special to break the record. Like I’ve said many times, [Twellman] a legend here in the club, in the league. I have more games [played] than him, I think, to break the record. But it’s a pleasure to have these words about him, and he’s a big legend,” Gil said after earning the title and receiving Twellman’s praise.
Twellman’s legacy, 101 goals and 28 assists, stood untouched for more than 15 years. As a striker, his impact came from finishing chances. Gil, a midfielder, thrives on creating them. His 82 assists are testament to his vision, drive, and selflessness.
“He's unassuming, he's quiet, but he is a leader. He's a leader in the way that he cares, in the way that he always contributes with goals and assists,” explained Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner, who made his debut appearance last Saturday night after returning to New England following three seasons in the English Premier League. “To do it in six years, and in the position that he is, it's not his game necessarily to score goals. Obviously, most of those are assists. He's just such an amazing player and such an amazing talent. I think there's no one more deserving to have that record for this club right now.”
With nine games remaining, Gil is keeping good pace with some of his best seasons as a Rev. His highest numbers came in 2023, when he clocked 26 total goal contributions in a single season. The captain continues to lead the scoring for the Revolution with nine goals and nine assists on his 2025 tally.
In Gil’s eyes, there’s no reason to slow down. As a team, he doesn’t question their ability to make a successful run to playoff contention as they near the end of 2025. Likewise, he’ll continue to do everything in his power to help the team get there.
“We need to improve,” declared the captain. “We are coming from a very difficult run, having bad games. But like I said, maybe it’s an opportunity for this group to do something special and important, because if you ask everyone right now, no one is going to say New England is going to be in the playoffs. No one. So, it’s an opportunity. We need to take that opportunity and try to do it.”
