FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner has been named the 2021 Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. The United States international captured MLS Goalkeeper of the Year honors for the first time in his career after leading the Revolution to the Supporters’ Shield crown and a league-record 73 points in the regular season.
Turner, 27, set a new Revolution club mark with 17 wins in the regular season, tied for the most by a goalkeeper in 2021. He recorded a 1.25 goals against average and 73.2 saves percentage over 28 starts, with five shutouts over the course of the season. His two penalty saves were tied for the second most in MLS this year. Turner was also the hero of the 2021 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target, earning the game’s Most Valuable Player award after stopping two attempts during the penalty shootouts as the MLS All-Stars defeated the LIGA MX All-Stars.
On the international stage, Turner emerged as one of the top goalkeepers for the U.S. Men’s National Team after making his international debut in January. He went 9-1-2 in 12 starts for the USA, including five shutouts in six games during the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup. Turner was named the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper and earned a Best XI nod en route to the Gold Cup title. He went on to start the first five U.S. games in the final round of Concacaf qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Among the top individual moments for Turner this season were a point-blank denial of MLS Golden Boot presented by Audi winner ValentĂn Castellanos of New York City FC in Week 8 (VIDEO HERE), and a dive at full extension to stop an attempt from the Colorado Rapids’ Cole Bassett in Week 33 (VIDEO HERE), both of which are among the 16 finalists for the 2021 MLS Save of the Year presented by Allstate, to be announced Nov. 23. Turner was named MLS Player of the Week for Week 8, which also included a penalty kick save vs. Castellanos.
The Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award was voted on by MLS club technical staff, media and current MLS players. Below is a breakdown of the voting results:
