Carles Gil continues to make statement performances for the New England Revolution, and the league is taking notice. After registering two assists in last Wednesday’s MLS All-Star Game, where he started for the MLS side, the Revolution captain had no trouble shifting back into regular season action. Gil recorded a goal and assist in New England’s 2-2 draw at CF Montréal on Saturday night, earning him a spot on the MLS Team of the Matchday presented by Audi for the sixth time this season.
Gil opened the scoring for New England in the 30th minute, converting his fourth penalty goal of the year. The Spaniard’s composure in big moments has made him the Revs’ go-to option from the spot. He made no mistake in Montréal, driving the ball into the top left corner to give New England the lead. The goal brought Gil to 21 career penalty kick goals, eighth most in MLS history.
The midfield maestro continued making an impact for New England throughout the night, as he combined with Peyton Miller to set up Dor Turgeman, who doubled the scoreline just six minutes later. With the assist, Gil climbed further up the league’s all-time leaderboards, moving into 10th in MLS history with 93 assists.
Following Saturday’s performance in Montréal, Gil continues to top the Revolution charts. He leads the squad with seven goals and six assists through 17 games.
While New England ultimately walked away with a single point from the visit to Canada, they improved their away record to 1-4-2. The result keeps New England third in the Eastern Conference standings as they prepare to host Western Conference side Houston Dynamo FC on Saturday, August 8 at 4:30 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium. The match will be the Revs’ final home contest before a two-game road stint.
