FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution have announced updates to the club’s technical staff ahead of the 2022 season, including the promotions of former Revolution greats Shalrie Joseph and Chris Tierney to new roles with the club. Joseph assumes the role of Assistant Coach and Tierney is the club’s new Director of Soccer Operations, both reporting to Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena, who recently signed a multi-year contract extension ahead of his fourth season in New England.
After spending the last two seasons as a head coach in the Revolution Academy, Joseph joins fellow assistant coaches Dave van den Bergh, Richie Williams, and Kevin Hitchcock on Arena’s staff. Joseph, 43, helped lead New England’s Under-15 team to the 2021 MLS NEXT Cup Semifinals before coaching the same group at the Under-17 level last season. He will continue to work closely with the Revolution’s youth teams in his new role.
Joseph began his coaching career as manager of the Grenada National Team from 2018-19, helping the Caribbean nation earn promotion to League A in the 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League. As a player, Joseph spent 11 seasons with the Revolution from 2003-12 and 2014, helping guide the club to three consecutive MLS Eastern Conference championships from 2005-07, a 2007 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup trophy, and the 2008 North American SuperLiga title. Joseph owns four MLS Best XI nods and seven MLS All-Star selections, both club records, and was named a finalist for the 2009 MLS MVP award.
Chris Tierney, who played all 11 of his MLS seasons in New England, has been promoted to Director of Soccer Operations. The Wellesley, Mass. native has been a central figure in the Revolution’s personnel department since August 2019 when he joined the front office as Player Recruitment Manager. Tierney has been instrumental in establishing the club’s pro player pathway through his work building the Revolution II roster, scouting, and more.
Curt Onalfo remains the club’s Technical Director in his fourth season in New England. With Tierney’s transition, Tyler Fletcher has been promoted to Director of Team Administration and Matchday Operations ahead of his 10th season with the club.
