Panayotou, 18, will join United States Head Coach Michael Nsien’s squad for the Stars and Stripes’ first appearance in the Pan American Games since 2007. This marks the Cambridge, Mass. native’s fourth international call-up after earning three selections to the U.S. Under-19 Men’s Youth National Team in 2022. Panayotou was one of two Revolution players who featured on the U.S. Under-19 roster that won the Slovenia Nations Cup in August 2022, along with New England teammate Esmir Bajraktarevic.
This season, Panayotou has registered 10 MLS appearances, including two starts, with 271 minutes played. He has also made 13 starts with New England Revolution II, netting five goals with three assists in MLS NEXT Pro. In last weekend’s MLS NEXT Pro Eastern Conference Semifinal, Panayotou recorded the game-winning assist to help Revolution II continue its first postseason run into the conference championship with a 2-1 victory over New York Red Bulls II.
Panayotou, who first joined the Revolution Academy in 2019, signed to New England’s MLS roster as the 10th Homegrown Player in club history on January 10, 2023. The midfielder made his MLS debut on March 25, 2023. In that match, he was one of three players 18 or younger in New England’s starting lineup alongside Bajraktarevic and Noel Buck. Bajraktarevic and Buck have also received international call-ups this month, with the United States Olympic Team and the England Under-19s, respectively. Bajraktarevic scored on Oct. 11 for the Olympic Team in a tune-up friendly against Mexico, while Buck is looking to make his first competitive appearance for England.
Last year, the 2022 UnitedHealthcare Revolution Academy Player of the Year helped lead New England’s Under 19s to the 2022 MLS NEXT Cup Championship, its second in a row, with a tournament-best six goals, including the winner in the final. Panayotou also played one season of collegiate soccer at Georgetown University, scoring a team-best seven goals with three assists as a freshman in 2022.
