FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – As the New England Revolution announced their decision to part ways with head coach Caleb Porter on Monday afternoon, attention quickly turned to the future. With only four games remaining in the 2025 season, assistant coach Pablo Moreira will step in as interim head coach while the Revolution front office begins its search for a new leader to take the helm.
The search for a new head coach began immediately following Porter’s release, and it’s a process the club is approaching with care and precision. Sporting director Curt Onalfo addressed the media on Tuesday afternoon, 24 hours after the announcement, emphasizing the importance of finding the right fit.
“We are going to spend an enormous amount of time profiling and getting exactly our credentials in terms of what we want, and characteristics for our new head coach. In time we’ll come up with that. One thing I can say that I’m very confident in, is that there are good candidates out there and we will find a good coach for us,” said Onalfo.
While no specific timeline has been set, the largest focus is simply on finding the right person. Onalfo will spearhead the hiring process, but it is ultimately a collaborative decision that requires the effort of everyone across Revolution leadership.
Despite the changes, the Revolution remain focused on performance in the immediate future. With a roster revamped during the previous offseason and bolstered through this year’s transfer windows, the club believes it has the talent to finish strong.
“Pablo [Moreira] has a different approach than Caleb. They’ve obviously worked together for years, and our goal is just to end the season strong,” said Onalfo.
While it can be difficult for clubs to go through such major leadership changes, Onalfo expressed nothing but confidence in the squad’s resilience and ability to navigate the shifts.
“In life you have difficult moments, and that’s when you find out what people are made of. It’s easy when things are going great, so we feel there is good character. There’s good leadership and a lot of quality,” he explained. “We believe in the group and we’ll continue, like every window, to make the team better.”
While the Eastern Conference playoff places are likely out of reach this season, Onalfo remains optimistic about the future and expressed gratitude for the club’s supporters, despite the tough decisions he’s had to make this week.
“I’m very optimistic, and they should be, as well. We have great fans, and we continue to build our fanbase,” he said. “As that continues to grow, the results continue to come, and our home record gets better, we’ll be in situations where the conversations are more positive.”
