FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (August 13, 2026) – The New England Revolution have acquired central defender Tylon Smith on loan from Queens Park Rangers F.C. through the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, with an option to purchase.

Smith, 21, arrives in New England following a brief spell with Queens Park Rangers F.C. of the English Football League (EFL) Championship, where he suited up for 10 appearances across the senior and U-21 levels from 2025-26. Prior to QPR, Smith began his professional career with his hometown club, Stellenbosch FC of the South African Premiership, after developing through the club’s academy.

Smith first featured for Stellenbosch in the PSL Reserve League, helping the club capture the 2023-24 PSL Reserve League title and the 2024 Premier League Next Generation Cup crown. After signing his first professional contract with Stellenbosch in October 2024, Smith was named 2024-25 PSL Reserve League Player of the Season.

On the international stage, Smith has collected 16 caps and scored one goal for South Africa’s Under-20 Men’s National Team. Last fall, he logged four starts, all 90-minute performances, in the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, helping guide South Africa to the Round of 16. In the group stage of the tournament, Smith posted a 90-minute shift in South Africa's 2-1 win over current Revolution Head Coach Marko Mitrović's U.S. U-20 squad, clinching a spot in the knockout rounds. In May 2025, Smith played every minute of South Africa’s seven fixtures at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), netting the game-winning goal in the semifinal against Nigeria.

Smith went on to claim the tournament’s top accolade, Man of the Competition, after leading South Africa to its first‑ever U‑20 AFCON title with a 1‑0 shutout victory over Morocco. Additionally, the central defender was named a finalist for the 2025 African Young Player of the Year award. In October 2024, Smith helped South Africa lift the 2024 Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) U-20 Challenge Cup trophy with a 2-0 win over Zambia, earning Man of the Match honors and a spot on the Team of the Tournament.

“Tylon Smith is a promising player who will help strengthen our defense,” Revolution General Manager and Chief Soccer Officer Chris Tierney said. “At just 21 years old, Tylon has built a strong foundation through both his club and youth national team experience. We’re confident that this is the ideal environment for Tylon to continue his development and we look forward to welcoming him to New England.”

The Revolution travel north of the border with a visit to Toronto FC on Saturday, August 15. The 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff at BMO Field will be available to watch on Apple TV in both English and Spanish, or tune in to the Revolution's radio calls on 98.5 The Sports Hub (WBZ-FM) and 1260 AM Nossa Radio USA (Portuguese).
