If this feels like déjà vu, it’s because it is: Carles Gil has been named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for a third time in 2025. The Revolution captain has long been one of the league’s best players, but lately he’s made a real habit of performing matchday after matchday.
After earning a spot on the bench for Matchday 10, Gil was selected to the starting XI for Matchday 11 following another stellar performance, this time leading the Revs to their fourth straight shutout win on Saturday at BMO Field. Gil opened the scoring early with a stunning, reactionary volley in just the 11th minute against Toronto, setting the tone for a dominant first half.
With five goals to his name, Gil currently tops the Revolution’s scoring chart. Trailing behind him is striker Leo Campana, who found his second goal of 2025 on Saturday afternoon, solidifying the 2-0 victory for New England.
Gil has not only been an integral aspect of the Revolution attack this season, but he’s also factored in defensively, playing his part as the Revs have set a new club record for best defensive start through 10 games with a league-low seven goals against.
The Revs now continue their campaign on the road, where they have proven to be a contender, winning three straight away from home, all by shutout.
“It’s very difficult in this league to win away games,” Gil said following Saturday’s match. “Even here, Toronto is in a difficult moment, but they have very good players. Like I said, if you give [Toronto FC] the opportunity to be in the game, score the first goal, you never know. They tied Miami and Vancouver, two of the best teams in the league. We came here and said that we want to be one of the best teams in the league. We showed that in the first half, scoring two goals. But, like I said, we could have scored three of four. That’s what we want, to be a big team in this league. Right now, we’re showing that we can do it.”
New England look to a busy week ahead, with a regional clash against Rhode Island FC in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday (7:30 p.m. ET), followed by a return to MLS play on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET) in Orlando, where they’ll aim to extend their win streak.
