CURRENT FORM
New England Revolution
13th in Eastern Conference (1-3-1, 4 pts.)
Last Result | 2-1 win vs. New York Red Bulls
New England snagged their first three-point result of the season last Saturday as they took down the New York Red Bulls in front of the Foxborough faithful. Eager for victory after going winless through the season’s first four games, captain Carles Gil stepped up to lead the Revs with a brace, including a stunning free kick and a stoppage-time winner from the penalty spot.
Now on the road for their next two matches – and eight of their next 10 – New England will look to enhance their attacking threat and capitalize on the confidence of a win. With an overall record of 4-0-1 in Cincinnati and 3-0-1 at TQL Stadium, the Revs are the only Eastern Conference team to remain unbeaten at FCC’s current venue.
FC Cincinnati
8th in Eastern Conference (3-2-1, 10 pts.)
Last Result | 2-1 win at Nashville SC
Shots were flying as FC Cincinnati visited Nashville SC at GEODIS Park last Saturday. With a total of 33 shots between the two teams, Cincinnati found 15 of those chances, with eight on target, but failed to find the net in the run of play – taking down Nashville in a similar fashion to the Revolution’s win over New York. Cincinnati secured their points with a free kick goal in the first half, and a stoppage-time penalty to seal the victory.
With nine goals against through six games – and having conceded a multitude of chances to Nashville SC – Cincinnati could be vulnerable to a rejuvenated Revolution attack, but the Revs will also have to withstand the test of FCC attacker Evander, who already boasts four goals and one assist this season after registering 15 and 19 with Portland in 2024.
KEY PLAYERS
Revolution midfielder Carles Gil
After last week’s brace, Gil was rewarded with a spot on the MLS Team of the Matchday, won Goal of the Matchday, and was a nominee for Player of the Matchday. With such esteemed recognition following his two-goal performance against New York, the midfield maestro will be one to watch in Cincinnati.
As a leader on the pitch, Gil will look to dictate the tempo for New England and help secure the team another win. The 32-year-old playmaker has some added motivation heading into Saturday’s match as he looks to break the Revolution club record for regular season assists, for which he is currently tied with Steve Ralston (73).
FC Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano
Celentano’s seven-save performance against Nashville SC earned him a deserved spot on the MLS Team of the Matchday as the starting goalkeeper in last week’s top XI. Keeping Cincinnati in the running, Celentano stopped a penalty from Nashville’s deadly midfielder Hany Mukhtar, which would have put Nashville in the lead at the time.
As if stopping a penalty wasn’t enough, the ‘keeper also delivered a double save in the 50th minute, denying both Alex Muyl and Sam Surridge in quick succession. Celentano’s defensive resolve will challenge the Revs, who have started to develop a scoring rhythm, but are still searching for more electricity on the attack.
HEAR FROM THE TEAM
Head coach Caleb Porter on the team’s mentality playing on the road:
“I think we need to be aggressive. We were aggressive last game. That doesn’t mean we were reckless. We had balance within the way we wanted to play, and the way we wanted to attack, and the way we wanted to get numbers forward. So, balance is always important, but I think we had the balance right. In this last game, we risked a little more. We had more numbers forward, especially in wide spots. We had better purpose to our attacking play. We were good in our transitions, [and] even in set-piece attacking. I don’t think we are all of a sudden now going to get conservative, just because we’re on the road and the fans in the stands are different.”
Winger Ignatius Ganago on his motivation to find his first MLS goal:
“I am really, really hungry for that. I hope the next game on Saturday [at FC Cincinnati] I will score the first goal. I really want to score that first goal. I think and I am hoping for many chances again. I really want to score this first goal and I really want the team to win every game. We want to win every game – we train for that, and we work hard for that. I want to score, but I want to score and get the team the win. I don’t just want to score and lose the game, it’s better if you score and you win.”
Defender Ilay Feingold on maintaining an aggressive mindset when playing on the road:
“Every game I play the same. I try to play my best game, and I think as a team we try to do that also. We have to keep the level and keep the motions we played in the last game. We need these three points, and then we are really back on track and it will be good.”
Midfielder Alhassan Yusuf on his optimism for the season ahead:
“I would say in the last two games, we played well. Against New York [City FC], we didn’t win, but then after last game [against New York Red Bulls] we got the three points. It’s something that is paying off, the way we are playing so, we have to just keep going.”
