Revolution Protect 12 Players from 2022 MLS Expansion Draft

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution protected 12 players from selection in Friday’s 2022 MLS Expansion Draft, in which Major League Soccer’s newest expansion club St. Louis City SC will select five players to continue building their inaugural roster ahead of the 2023 MLS season. The 2022 MLS Expansion Draft on Friday, Nov. 11 begins at 7:00 p.m. ET (watch on MLSsoccer.com. St. Louis City SC may select five players from the pool of eligible players, and no more than a single player from any one club. The five teams that had a player selected by Charlotte FC in the 2021 MLS Expansion Draft are exempt from the Friday’s draft. Complete draft rules and procedures are available here. 

The remaining 23 clubs, including New England, may protect up to 12 players from their Senior and Supplemental rosters. If a player has a no-trade clause in his contract, his MLS club must protect him and he will count as one of the 12 protected players. If a player is out of contract at the end of 2022, he is still considered part of the club’s roster for the Expansion Draft. 

Players that are automatically protected include Generation adidas players or Homegrown Players that are 25 years old and under in the year in which the Expansion Draft takes place. Designated Players and other discretionary players such as U22 Initiative signings are not automatically protected. Clubs with four or more international players, including New England, must protect at least three international players, excluding any automatically protected players.

Clubs that have a player selected in the Expansion Draft will receive $50,000 in General Allocation Money as compensation. In the history of the MLS Expansion Draft, 11 Revolution players have been selected by incoming clubs, most recently in 2019 when Nashville SC selected defender Jalil Anibaba.
