For the third week in a row, New England have a player amongst the matchday’s best XI. This time – after being named to the bench on Matchday 10 – Carles Gil has earned a spot on the MLS Team of the Matchday presented by Audi, following his clutch game-winning performance on Saturday night.

Tied 0-0 deep into stoppage time against Charlotte FC, the Revs looked like they would take just a single point from the weekend at Gillette Stadium. That was until New England earned a penalty in the final minutes of the game and got their opportunity to secure the win. In the most important moment of the match, there was no better answer than Carles Gil to step up and convert the chance. Ever poised, the captain snatched all three points for the Revolution in the 97th minute, bringing the team to 5-0-0 to start the season at home. It is just the second time in club history that the Revolution have had such a powerful start in Foxborough.

“Those who haven’t been in those situations don’t know how difficult it is,” explained head coach Marko Mitrović following the match. “You’re in additional time, two minutes before the end of the game, and you know that this is the winning shot in the game, almost. I just respect and appreciate Carles a lot as a player and as a person. Carles taking that responsibility and not shaking.”

Gil’s goal brought the Revs to five wins in their last six matches, as they carry a six-game unbeaten streak. The midfielder now leads the team in goals alongside Peyton Miller, each with three on their tally. Gil has also secured the second-most goal contributions for the Revs, with six overall (3 goals, 3 assists). His Team of the Matchday honors are the fifth time this season a Revolution player has earned the nod.

“Obviously, it was a big moment, a moment that we like to have. I think we dictated that moment too, because we were pushing in the second half, creating some chances against a difficult team. I’m obviously very happy with the three points, and still winning every game at home is amazing. We want to continue this,” Gil said on Saturday night.

After leading New England in goal contributions every year since 2021, it’s apparent that Gil is not slowing down. The Spaniard continues to lead the Revolution to victory, as they look to continue their perfect home form in the middle of a four-game homestand. The Revs will continue their stay in Foxborough this Saturday night, May 9, kicking off against the defending Supporters’ Shield winners, Philadelphia Union at 7:30 p.m. ET.
